Explained the peer-reviewed line of research showing that our tests in fact reveal net neutrality violations due to DPI-based throttling. Was told the app was rejected because "it can potentially provide inaccurate information to users." (2/n)
Asked if all apps that are accepted into the app store pass the test of not "potentially providing inaccurate information to users." Was told this is not relevant.
Was told that "other factors you don't consider could lead us to draw the wrong conclusions." Explained that we take these factors into account using statistical tests. (4/n)
Was told the "iOS operating system doesn't provide access to specific private APIs or other hardware that may affect the results." Asked point blank what APIS or hardware would influence our result. Answer: "I have no details to give you." (5/n)
AFAICT, the app was rejected because we used the words "net neutrality" in the description. No attempt was made to understand what the app does, or to verify the science behind it. (6/n)
But hey, at least we now know where @apple stands on net neutrality.

Looks very useful. The Android app asks for permissions at install, I noticed. Targeting an older api-- any chance for source? Also, why no TLS at http://dd.meddle.mobi ?
Interesting work. While A/V stream speed is an easy, intuitive concept for people to rally behind, I hope you also look at access to information (e.g. news) where latency might affect people's behavior more than throughout. The host classifiers feel especially dangerous.
It's an interesting area to study for sure, and our techniques can also detect delay-based differentiation -- we just haven't found any examples in the wild. Not hard to add such tests, just hasn't been a priority yet.
