    Our fingerprints are reasonably accurate over time as new versions of apps are released, requiring updates to fingerprints on the scale of months. And we're making our dataset and code publicly available when we release our paper, so others can benefit from the work.

    We found that we actually can reliably fingerprint apps using temporal correlations in among features pertaining to the destinations that apps contact. Our accuracy is nearly 90% across both iOS and Android apps, and we can detect most apps within five minutes of running.

    In this paper, we ask the question of whether it is possible to fingerprint apps---even those never seen before---simply by looking at their (largely encrypted) network traffic. This has been a tremendously difficult problem, made more challenging due to constant app updates.

    I worry, though, that complaining about this will shoo away some prospective students who would actually be a good fit even though they don't know it, while doing nothing to stem the tide of emails from prospective students who are a terrible fit.
