Obama Campaign: Eric Schmidt introduces Dems to surveillance capitalist predictive analytics on voters Trump Campaign: Mercers introduce internationalized militarized voter surveillance to GOP 2020 Campaign: What surveillance will voters accept in a Post-Cambridge Analytica age?

I'm not consulting for any campaigns. But if I were, I'd say make your whole digital operation voluntarily GDPR-compliant. And then campaign on a data rights for Americans. And win. Because it's one of the few bi-partisan issues out there.

Judging by the response to BERN today, seems fair to say that campaigns risk underestimating how badly Cambridge Analytica has poisoned the idea of voter analytics and targeting for everyone…except the true-believer trumpists. The new digital strategy needs to be built on TRUST.

Does the Bernie campaign even realize that NY Attorney General James has opened a probe into Facebook for this exact thing? https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/25/technology/facebook-new-york-attorney-general-investigation.html …https://twitter.com/The_Lady_Red/status/1122975750682898432?s=20 …

Not sure I see the GDPR issue (which is obviously not applicable in the US...yet). Volunteers are collecting email and phone number info from rally attendees, meaning people are opting in - no GDPR issue there. The only thing that isn't clear is how people opt out.
-
The consent scenario of the app which invites people to enter personal data without their express consent would be inadequate for GDPR which considers political profiling a sensitive category. There are no accompanying data rights such as Right of Access, Explanation, Delete etc.
-
A GDPR-compliant BERN would need to get specific consent from individuals before being politically profiled while also notifying them of their data rights and how to exercise them. It sort of breaks the model of friends/family/volunteers from doing the harvesting without consent.
-
Bernie doesn't need to be GDPR-compliant. But it's a bit off-brand to not adopt the principles of data privacy as dignity which originate from democratic socialist Europe which enshrined data protection as a fundamental human right in the EU charter.
-
Sent a reply highlighting a particular article related to GDPR + political data. I'm curious on your take.

Wow, this is seriously messed up. My personal data is my property - I don't want a presidential candidate or anyone else plugging me into a data base without my consent.
-
By downloading the app, wouldn’t you be giving consent?
-
You'd have to explicitly request and store the consent from every person before entering their personal data into the BERN app if it were to be made compliant to the GDPR.
-
10-4, it doesn’t appear we have similar safeguards in the US.
-
Not at all. The rules for consent to opt-into any communications in Europe and Canada are MUCH stricter, and the penalties for using data that is not opted in are much higher. I thought the US would follow suit, but under this admin, no way.
-
Have these standards been implemented in
and
(and BrexitLand) recently, during this awful ***** administration? -
Yes. Last year. (I train people on nonprofit development software). GDPR is a huge deal for nonprofits. I was partway through a training last year when it went into effect, it was all new to me!
