As part of a book project with on social media tips for early career scholars, I thought it might be interesting to share some thoughts-in-progress in this thread on online engagement strategies for academics. Feedback is welcome :)

*hiring a TT professor* universities: fit is so important to us, we really want somebody who wants to be here also universities: sure you've worked here as an adjunct for 10 years, but we just don't think you'll be a good fit

I get funny looks when I tell colleagues I enjoy working in an admin capacity. It’s not that I enjoy bureaucracy or paperwork, I just appreciate the opportunity to advocate for faculty and students at as many levels as I can be useful. And the politics keeps things interesting 😉

Does anyone have good examples of highly consequential statistical errors in individual papers? I still think that the Duckworth and Quinn higher-order factor analysis one is a doozy because it is the foundation of "grit" but I'm sure that there are even better ones out there.

One the hardest parts of academia (aside from funding rates) is the distance we live from family. Aging parents, small child and a minimum 4.5 trip home (flight + drive) really hits home

44% of MDs report burnout, with administrative task burden—including email overload—a key contributor to burnout. Authors call on academic institutions to provide faculty and staff with tools to filter, block and otherwise manage email overload.

A paper on "procrastination, motivation, and burnout in faculty" is a very popular read for faculty.

Not new, but are they talking about me? "... new faculty ... report frequently procrastinating on scholarly writing tasks (e.g., research manuscripts) and unintentionally delaying writing activities due to busyness with other academic responsibilities."

When it comes to improving graduate education, we often talk about mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and mental health as three separate needs. In reality, they are inextricably linked. That may mean real change is more difficult, but it also means change is more impactful.

Shereen Siddiqui reminds us that community colleges are NOT "less than." Faculty do not teach there as a "last resort." In fact, profs are fantastic teachers, and students are just as smart as 4 year college students. We have to stop stigmatizing community colleges.

I started college as a 31-year-old, single mother, and a high school drop out. Yesterday I was recommended for tenure . Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way. It's a very happy day.

If your field: i) tests hypotheses, ii) rewards successful hypotheses with career advancement, and iii) has no stringent mechanisms to prevent researcher biases influencing the evaluation of hypothesis tests, then I'm sorry to say that publication bias exists in your field

Imagine being the famous professor at a prestigious institution who feels comfortable writing this👇 in a manuscript review of an ECR's preregistered (non-RR) study This is one of the reasons I believe professors should have to sign their reviews

TL;DR: automatic detection of fabricated data is difficult, and while some algorithms perform pretty well, this should not (yet?) be broadly implemented. Cool preprint by et al.
