I also find that people who claim "historians never teach X" often come in with certain preconceived notions, regardless of where academic consensus is.

As a history teacher, it's never "historians never tell you about", it's more one of two things. 1) I never paid attention in my history class. 2 (and more likely)) My history teacher was not allowed to teach me about .... because parents/faculty/society would get upset.
