  1. Calling something terrorism = license for repressive governments to do whatever they like. And lots of Western partners happy to play this game.

Some extremely important points in this excellent, detailed, and disturbing op-ed. “Publishers’ interest in amplifying Black voices wanes as media coverage peters out because “many white editors are not exposed to Black life beyond the headlines.”

One of the saddest aspects of life is when excellent people rule themselves out of various opportunities, whereas others - often the beneficiaries of great unmerited privilege - have an immense sense of entitlement.

Despite countless appeals to reverse the death sentences & release the four jailed journalists, the Houthis have not budged. These journalists should never have been arrested in the first place, much less face the death penalty. My op-ed on

The UAE is implicated in war crimes in Yemen, fomenting chaos and civil war in Libya, and has an atrocious domestic human rights record. Any transfers of arms to the UAE puts our interests and values at enormous risk. I vehemently oppose these arms sales.

It’s terrible to see such craven politics from Macron. Nothing honorable here. Yemen and now Egypt, sacrificed for the sake of arms sales.

Does Macron believe that was fighting terrorism in arresting prominent human rights defenders from ? He knows better, both about them and the hundreds of others who remain unjustly jailed in dangerous, even deadly conditions while facing terrorism charges

It’s unfortunate to see how Macron has failed to heed and important call for states to hold others abusing CT laws to account. Instead Macron frames human rights and CT as an either/or choice. It is not.

These are so beautiful. My grandfather used to own a small set of movie theaters, mostly in Vijayawada. I remember visiting as a child, going up to the projector room, coming home with strips of celluloid in my pockets.

The failures of U.S. counterterrorism assistance in west Africa have recently been highlighted by the unlikeliest of critics—the State Department and the Department of Defense. Excellent piece by my collaborator

Well, either it was war, or it was extrajudicial execution. Not sure why the latter was “too easy.”

Thank you . It would be more than nice if Obama was honest about the brutal legacy of the drone program he defends. Many of those who created, supported this program now on their way back into government. So is Obama saying, go ahead, pick up where I left off?

"Obama handed Trump a loaded gun, or should I say a loaded drone. He set the precedent of targeting an American citizen for death without trial via drone strike. All of that part of his legacy. And it would be nice if at this point he was just honest about it."
