I think it is a poorly-framed quote that will become an anti-vaxxer talking point for countless social media posts. I also think it's misleading: Where's the evidence for flu booster shots weakening our protection against influenza every year?

Dr. Moore, who gave the quote, said the article was "excellent," and has talked to many others who share the same concern. Also, he was talking about boosting frequently, not every year. What is the consensus among B-cell and T-cell immunologists? You're mentioning one dude. I'm sure his mother thought it was an excellent article, too

The point is no one is suggesting we treat SARS-CoV-2 like an allergen we are trying to induce tolerance to. . I know of exactly zero credible colleagues in the vaccine(s) / immunology field who are worried that booster shots are going to backfire.

I would be interested in some input from other immunologists and vaccine researchers as well, perhaps @profshanecrotty @vanGilsLab @k_stephensonMD @andrew_croxford .

Yes I agree. Would have to be many boosters in a short space of time. Perhaps Moore was speaking from experience with HIV vaccine work in rhesus macaques where some of the protocols entail 5, 6 or more shots within a few months.

In my PhD we immunized macaques 6 times over 120 days, we MAY have seen some kind of immunotolerance effect where peak titres began to decline after 4 shots, but difficult to tell. Caveats this was in a rhesus macaque model and it was HIV related immunogen so not COVID-19 related

He was indeed talking about frequent boosting, as the article notes, not annual — as in a booster now and one for omicron in 2-3 mos when that becomes available etc. He was also not saying that it *will* happen, just that there concerns to weigh before rushing ahead

I’m encouraged that you think we’ll have Omicron boosters in 2-3 months! In any case, as @zeynep @PeterHotez @EricTopol and others have been saying for a while now, this is turning out to be a 3 shot vaccine. Calling the third shot a booster was a mistake in retrospect

Is it time to call it "3-shot-vaccine", or is it still "at-least-3-shots-vaccine"?
