Redistricting reform in VA is moving forward! A big part of successful implementation is transparency. The enabling legislation to the constitutional amendment has good public data provisions - but they can be improved even further. (1/4)
The enabling legislation (HB758/SB203) could require that Commission meetings be recorded, transcribed, and archived. That's already in the non-constitutional alternative approach, HB1256. (2/4)
Even better though, draft maps could be published regularly (even daily!), which would improve the current requirement in any of these bills. And election data could be released in advance for citizens' use, as it is in NJ's new law: the Voting Precinct Transparency Act. (3/4)
In any case, it is great to see the Commonwealth take its first steps towards fair, open, and transparent redistricting this week. Excited to see what happens as these bills go to the full chambers next week! (4/4)
