This would be disastrous for American anthropology. Historical particularism a la Franz Boas? No thanks. Things are bad, but that time was arguably worse.

I don't think historical particularism really dominated until Boas' students took over (ex. Mead and Benedict in the 1920's/1930's). In the late 1890's/early 1900's early anthropologists/sociologists were still doing a lot of excellent, broad cross-cultural work ala James Frazer.
