Critics of my “enforced monogamy” comments in the NY Times: why do you think polygamy is illegal? Why do you think marriage is essentially a human universal, as described by Donald Brown? http://j.mp/2IzPnD2 pic.twitter.com/C1jGjIeD57

You're mind-reading now. He's never said "one system fits all people". Just that, it's the most stable system for society, at large, and works for most people, on average. The conservative idea is to not break things that are functional. Mess with at own peril, that's all.
The conservative idea is also to leave folks be so they can live their own lives as they see fit. Land of the free.
Here's my hot take. The "enforced monogamy" thing was an attempt by Jordan to be especially provocative. He used the NYT article (wide exposure) to try to stir up some extra controversy (which is working). It's clumsy though & feels forced to me, almost disingenuous.
I say disingenuous based entirely on my own gut reaction. It's just my opinion. But everything up to this moment has felt "organic"w/ Jordan. This though, like I said, feels a little forced. It's missing something. It just feels off.
Your description needn't follow, Prof. Miller. The case can be made on prudent grounds (minimizing strife & maintaining cohesion); life is tradeoffs: no commitment to moral universalism is required.
It's good for the individuals involved, perhaps, but not necessarily good for society, should it become widespread.
Norms that are negotiated among broadly free individuals are not, by my definition, "totalitarian." Norms that are imposed top down with autocratic coercion are totalitarian. Do you believe that the preeminence of monogamy in Western societies is a simple autocratic imposition?
Yes, the monogamy norm is imposed top down by the institution of goverment by coercion, hence its totalitarian. Its preeminence is largely due to privatization cost and benefits of having offspring tho.
does he think it fits all people though? because it is possible that enforced monogamy maximises total happiness without fitting everyone
And on that note, how is your new book coming along Prof. @primalpoly? :=)
