Evolution is just life's way of recording reproductive success for quality and training purposes.
It's genetic drift, which is technically a form of evolution, but not one that can shape complex adaptations.

genetic drift change in dist that is incidental and not a result of differential selection I *think* Dave was asking in the frame of selective pressures. but differential success being from selecting from the existing distribution, rather than as a result of mutation, yes?

and if that is the case, my answer would be yes that is absolutely evolution (and could be thought of as an adaptive response at the population level) evolution: generation of variety (e.g. mutation make new things) selection (some things don't make it)
