Crazier still...where was everybody at before? China was already a billion plus in 1990. Was everyone living in the country? Even Not sure if I would call it country if it was that dense.

Interesting point is that most Shenzhen residents are Mandarin speakers as opposed to Cantonese like the rest of Guangdong province. The population was imported from the north / west. Imagine a city popping up beside Paris where everyone speaks German.

C’mon Geoff, it’s much more important for us to argue about ultimately trivial social issues than to worry about actual economic and human development. It’s what marks us as more advanced than China or something.

Yes. Nothing more than a fishing village in the 1970s. Shenzhen being established as a Special Economic Zone in 1980 changed all that.
