I'm just looking at all these people running around on dates and going to parties and hikes and plays, and it's like... don't these people have planets to take care of? Aren't they afraid their civilizations will collapse into barbarism while they're distracted?

The sad thing is, the perpetual hikers & party-goers often aren't even enjoying it that much, but are conforming to lifestyle-consumerist indoctrination about what constitutes a 'healthy', 'fulfilled' life.

lol. that’s why there’s been a massive fall in leisure time, party attendance & social capital in the last 25 years that’s also highly predictive of depression, anxiety, mental illness & suicide. But ok buddy, whatever the fuck you say.

also, idk what you’re basing this off—maybe subjective self report data (but i doubt even that)—but BOTH hiking & partying are predictive of long term happiness, remission from depression, life expectancy, social satisfaction & other metrics of fulfillment.

Jesus Christ evolutionary psychologists are stupid. Like this is so well studied, it’s not even funny. The work on social capital, the economics of happiness, social predictors of health, the ethnography of ritual etc is incredibly robust & well worn. Like, read a fucking book.
