It’s nice to see the left/academia (but I repeat myself) finally noticing these facts after Republicans have been noting them for decades. What took you so damn long? And why now? What changed?
What changed for me was seeing too many SJW online hate mobs attacking researchers I respected for saying empirically true things.

I think that’s the reason more generally too. It wasn’t until the left had what it saw as a serious challenge to its hegemony that it finally was forced to make an actual argument. Before then hubris and complacency ruled it.

From someone who only sees the extreme left in academic circles (I know people who spoke glowingly about N. Korea), they feel extremely threatened by the 'current climate of hatred and intolerance'. I don't think this is in any way strategic, it's zealotry.
