On the face of it, it seems more likely to be ungeneralizable than untrue. Perhaps the Robber's Cave version worked because boys in Oklahoma were more ingroup-outgoup oriented and more aggressive than boys in Middle Grove NY per DH Fischer's Albion's Seed.
