One simple way to avoid 'involuntary celibacy' is for straight men to wear shoes that are not sexually repulsive on the first date. That's called 'counter-signaling'. We also discuss it in the Mate book.

How is it ever possible to verify or falsify signalling theory? Perhaps there are many examples of kinds of correlation? But couldn't these be explained by appeal to our subconscious instead? And how can we verify or falsify that?

Er, but how do you establish whether women place more emphasis on shoes, as opposed to trousers? Because more say so? Trousers might be more influential than shoes, even though there is a wider range of shoe design (and is it true that there is a wider range of shoe design?).

Perhaps the women who say that shoe are more influential than trousers are expressing an unconscious bias towards trousers. How do you know? There are plenty of psycological theories that try to explain our choices by appealing to our subconscious rather than what we say.
