War is driven by sexual competition, not by weapons. As we've known for 50 years, chimpanzee males engage in coalitional warfare to kill rival males in neighboring territories, using their bare hands and teeth.https://twitter.com/Pontifex/status/990553785415200773 …

Do we really want peace? Then let’s ban all weapons so we don’t have to live in fear of war.

This is incorrect on many levels. 1. Scale. Chimp “war” involves dozens, human nation wars involve millions. Chimps use physical body, see & feel the resource they desire (sex access being one).

Humans - defense contractor/weapon maker, soldier, politician/decision maker all are separate groups, each with very different incentives. Tribal warfare maybe a better comparison, but a gross approximation still.

That sounds like saying accidents are not driven by cars over speeding in the bicycle lane, but by humans’ desire to get to places... when faced with the suggestion to ban cars in bicycle lanes.

Great example of why many are skeptical about the overreach of evolutionary psychology. How about some circumspection in extrapolating from chimps to humans?

        1) Weapons are not an essential component of war. 2) Banning anything requires one or more essential components of war. 3) Peace and war are not mutually exclusive. 4) What if "they" don't want to be a part of "we?”
