Assuming BDSM stems from trauma is not only empirically inaccurate, it pathologizes the material reality for those who find it pleasurable.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions I have to overcome when I teach human sexuality. Students seem to pick it up mostly from CSI: SVU and other sensationalist media.
