Ya it's a sticky wicket. We have to jettison the idea of merit while maintaining the idea of virtue - I'm not sure we are capable of this. Conscientiousness remains something to celebrate and aspire to, but we shouldn't lionize those lucky to be more conscientious than average.
Could a person with mental retardation choose a different outcome? Answer would likely be no. However could a lazy person choose to be industrious? Would they still be lazy? Does the perceived ability to choose matter? I think it must be a discussion of potential.
