There is no good or bad without us, there is only perception. There is the event itself and the story we tell ourselves about what it means.
This doesn't make sense when applied to animal welfare issues. The battery-caged chicken is sentient, and suffers whether we ignore it, tell ourselves a nice story about it, or do something to alleviate its suffering. In utilitarian morality, the suffering in intrinsically bad.

Agreed. Value and sentience are intertwined; sentience is pervasive; good/ bad relating to suffering is pervasive. the subjectivist account really isn’t useful, it violently cleaves us from natural process. no doubt we interpret according to perception - that’s sentience.
