Organized religion is only a few thousand years old. Our moral instincts like compassion run much deeper. And the most ethical people I know, in the Effective Altruism movement, tend not to be religious.

Agreed with GM and IM. Moral instincts are older than religion. However, religion backed by "divine authority" has been a highly effective way of storing, building upon and relaying hard won moral victories. There is noise in the signal of course and is subject to abuse.
