Would you be happy with gov't CCTV cameras pointed at the front door of every residence in the US? It might technically be 'public info', but it would still be invasive and probably unconstitutional.

First of all journalists are often at risk due to being perceived as "snitches" by organized crime, terror groups and oppresive governments. The government can't protect citizens it has no clue exist. Second of all, nobodies freedom of speech is being infringed upon.
