But I don't think the scientific side of the discussion has yet dealt with the serious ramifications if, all else being equal, genes directly encode large differences between lineages in cognitive capacity. Across species, it seems like an animal's rights (or moral claims on our concern) should depend on its empirically established sentience & sapience. (e.g. research now shows chickens are surprisingly smart).
