Females have been secreting milk to feed offspring for at least 200 million years, since the earliest proto-mammals. So why do some people still get distressed by seeing public breast-feeding? Seems like a weird thing to stigmatize. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22436214 pic.twitter.com/f18RN6o4lc

Animals haven’t been wearing clothes for millennia but seeing a dude’s junk at the grocery store elicits revulsion. It’s called modern society

You think breast-feeding is revolting? Why?

Why is it an 'intimate act'? It's just feeding your baby. Why would strangers need to consent to one's baby being fed? It's none of their business.

I’ll say this. It’s not difficult (usually) tonuse a hooter hider thing and just feed the kid. Some women want to make a statement. Personally I don’t care. But it’s bothersome for others to see, including other young kids. But to each their own..

I had no problem breastfeeding in public. I was a fierce mom of twins. Don't come between my babies and milk!

But that's a very American thing. I breast fed my daughter almost 30 years ago, naked breasts, in Brazil and all I got was "awnnn..." looks and comments. Even to my dad, who would never watch me naked, my milk-filled breasts were just baby food.

It's common place in several South American countries. It also crosses class and racial boundaries. Well... racial boundaries with respect to Brazil are kind of hard to establish but yes: breast feeding is pretty ok there. I don't remember in Europe, I was mostly there for work.

It’s probably not just the fact that breasts serve double duty as nourishers and secondary sex characteristics, but that psychologically any reminder of animal nature/equivalency is negative. See: extensive articles on death anxiety, terror management.

Has time got anything to do with it? There are far older things we "stigmatize" more.
