True, and yet, I think animal welfare ethics should depend on outcomes of research on animal sentience. (e.g. studies show fish feel more pain than we thought, so we should treat them better).

I wonder how many people think otherwise. I know some people (including progressives and liberals) who assume (mostly implicitly) that if some human populations are biologically smarter than others, then discrimination would be permissible.
