Want to revolutionize democracy and reduce partisanship? Eliminate gerrymandering by using fully automated redistricting software that uses _only_ data about the spatial distribution of U.S. citizens -- not their demographics or party affiliation.https://reason.com/archives/2018/03/27/gerrymandering-is-out-of-control …

That would be an amazing game-changer for nuking the two-party system's strangehold on American politics ...

We long known this is possible, and preferable from a neutral point of view. Problem is, politicians in a position to choose aren't in neutral mood. Push would have to come from citizens, who today are also far from a neutral mood.

Yes yes yes. I don’t often agree with you but I TOTALLY agree. I don’t understand why legislatures are allowed to draw district lines in the first place. It makes no sense. They are incentivized to gerrymander so of course shady lines are drawn.

@FiveThirtyEight has a great series on #Gerrymandering and why it’s not so easy to just say “automate” it.

That's fine I guess, but imagine all the ways elected officials could enhance the district boundary drawing process if they are permitted to decide.

Single member districts are the root cause of gerrymandering. A good software ‘solution’ just changes the problem. In one close election republicans could win all the seats and the democrats could win all the seats in the next close election. Lather, rinse, repeat.

better, just reduce district size back to 30k. This solves a ton of problems at once. here's a thread on it and a site with more, older depth and arguments https://twitter.com/AnalyticD/status/970077549798838272 … http://www.thirty-thousand.org

The Constitution limits representation to 1 rep per 30,000 population. The Dems should pass a Reapportionment Act in 2019 under reconciliation going right back to this limit. This will have a bit over 10700 reps. Those reps will never repeal because it would remove their jobs.
