Perfect way of putting it. "Problematic" is a completely insufficient way to discredit debate. The win/lose mentality is all wrong. Debate is a "listen to this, and "win" with me." situation. The conflict aims towards convincing through reason. No one loses through persuasion.

I miss being able fiddle with my pipe, rub my chin, peer over my glasses, and say hmmm, when I was caught out or too lazy to think. Though, I never mastered the bemused “you’re clearly wrong and I’m trying to find a nice way to say that,” look. Possibly, because I was a kid.
