Interestingly enough, I think the same could be said of the biblical scriptures. But anyways, I think many fail to realize that to some, the bill of rights is more than just ideas of the times, but timeless moral principles that are required for a healthy society.
'Venerable social norms' could also include 'venerable moral principles', if we crank up the ethical heft of the social norms.
