I obviously agree with your *general* point that people should try to understand something before they push for legislative change. But you also seem to be conveniently overlooking that most people simply want tighter assault weapon laws, not to ban all guns.
Rifles account for only 300 homicides a year. Handguns, more than 6,000. What rational person would want to ban the first, except in reaction to a moral panic?

yeah agreed. But even so, I think it's very unreasonable to mock kids & their parents for taking a strong (albeit weakly thought-through) action in response to the problem. Their anxiety over further school shootings is completely reasonable.

The relative paucity of rifle homicides compared to handguns isn’t necessarily an argument against banning rifles. Need to weigh the relevant costs and benefits. I do agree it is important to understand the issue though. To quantify the benefit, need to be accurate about numbers
