If the government bans semi-auto rifles, how will it confiscate more than 50 million semi-auto rifles owned by American citizens as their constitutional right? This proposal isn't 'common sense gun control'. It's a trigger for outright civil war.

That's a good point. I would suggest, as a starting point, banning the sale of such weapons, and all of their accessories (magazines etc), while at the same time instituting a voluntary buyback program - with generous financial incentives to do so.

Also why ban semi-auto rifles, which account for fewer than 300 homicides/year (vs 6,000 handgun homicides, or 100,000 deaths due to medical error)? This is a classic moral panic.

“semi-automatic weapons that fire high-velocity rounds” Another vague idea that allows an ocean of interpretion—including to restrict guns that would fall under *no one’s* idea of “assault weapons.” The mention of “velocity” is a good tell since it’s functionally meaningless.
