We have only come to believe this from a fairly short anomalous period of human history. Peterson’s suppositions are based on a much longer and wider sample set. I suspect that the cultural transition from tribal and extended family honor to individual liberation play a big part.
I'm well aware of the diversity of primate mating patterns, and of prehistoric and historic human mating patterns. Different ecological, technological, economic, political, religious, and cultural contexts favor different mating patterns over time. Some may now be obsolete.

Fair enough. This is, of course, your area of expertise so I hope my comment wasn’t too ignorantly condescending. ;) I myself struggle with where the line is drawn between traditional stability and idealistic progress as it pertain to mating. As you say, context matters.
