Good question; we don't yet. We already know that lifelong monogamous marriage doesn't seem to work for most people. So it would be nice to have a few field-tested options out there for different kinds of folks.

We have only come to believe this from a fairly short anomalous period of human history. Peterson’s suppositions are based on a much longer and wider sample set. I suspect that the cultural transition from tribal and extended family honor to individual liberation play a big part.

I'm well aware of the diversity of primate mating patterns, and of prehistoric and historic human mating patterns. Different ecological, technological, economic, political, religious, and cultural contexts favor different mating patterns over time. Some may now be obsolete.
