Good question; we don't yet. We already know that lifelong monogamous marriage doesn't seem to work for most people. So it would be nice to have a few field-tested options out there for different kinds of folks.

We have only come to believe this from a fairly short anomalous period of human history. Peterson’s suppositions are based on a much longer and wider sample set. I suspect that the cultural transition from tribal and extended family honor to individual liberation play a big part.

Also low dimorphism would be consistent with poly networks and roughly equal variance in male and female reproductive success.

Can you point to some resources? I’ve only met one person who has lived a polamorous lifestyle and it doesn’t seem much different than serial monogamy with side benefits.
