Should @POTUS sign an executive order withholding all federal funds from all public universities that do not fully comply with the free speech protections of the First Amendment?

Good lord. You want Donald Trump making these decisions for us?

Incidentally *this* is a great example of why I’m a conservative.

To me DJT is the clearest possible argument against big central gov. EG imagine a program you think the central gov should be in charge of, now imagine the electorate voted for DJT to run it. Do you still want the central gov to do it? If not, come to the dark side of federalism.

Well, DJT promised to protect Medicare & SS, & probably got votes because of it. Despite his, um, stewardship, I’m still glad those federal programs exist.

Though, to be fair, he doesn't actually have much control over those. My point: Don't want a DOE run by Devos? Why do we need anything but a barebones national DOE anyway? (etc)

I would argue that states have abdicated many of their responsibilities and the federal gov are doing a lot of things states should be doing. One interesting question for a historian is: what is the cause and the effect? Did the abdication or the central power grab come first?

I think Lincoln and FDR did the power grab, and the states stepped back after that.
