I'm not sure I follow... Can someone give me an example of a right we have that we're born with that the government doesn't support us to express? I'm genuinely after a clean debate and will change my views if given good, coherent arguments that I cannot refute.

The idea of 'natural rights' is the heart of the US Constitution, although debatable (Hume called them 'nonsense upon stilts'). Examples of natural rights would include right to free speech, freedom of association, property rights, etc.

OK. Thanks Geoffrey. I'll go one by one if that's ok? Freedom of speech; before freedom of speech was a right, speech wasn't free, and those in power could imprison or kill you if you said anything they didn't like e.g. Galileo. Now if you say anything someone powerful doesn't...

people throughout history and all over the world - and it requires that you know a powerful body is out there that will defend you and punish bad actors if they try to stifle or silence you from saying what you want to say. Does this argument hold water to you?

This was basically Hume's argument, IIRC. If a 'right' has no intrinsic power to enforce itself, it's largely fictional. But I think there's merit in treating social constructs as inalienable rights, even if they are alienable.

Interesting... Maybe my issue but I don't see the same merit as you do. If no one will defend my right to my property and my family can be evicted from property I legally own with absolutely no recourse and support from the gov. what help does calling this right 'inalienable'

It motivates other citizens to get pissed off and resist the government and elect different leaders. It supercharges moral outrage.
