Is envy adaptive? Most would rather make $75K and have their neighbors make $60K than to make $100K while neighbors make $150K. This is one of the heuristics in behavioral economics.
I'm well aware of that, and wrote about it in Spent. But it's still an irrational and ungrateful reaction.
