The Myers-Briggs personality types were invented in 1944 based on Jungian psychoanalysis concepts from the 1920s. They've never been valid, and have been obsolete for over 60 years. Companies and therapists that use them are committing scientific malpractice.pic.twitter.com/qsdSXM7jzq

1/ When you say "not valid", what does that mean? Is it that the categories don't carve nature at its joints? Is it that the underlying theory is bad? Is it that you don't get out more than you put in? Is it that the core distinctions are too vague?

It means the MBTI categorizations don't predict real-life outcomes very well, like educational performance, job performance, marital outcomes, political attitudes, mental health issues, etc.

As a simpler heuristic, I’m often surprised at the disdain directed at it - it has most of the same dimensions as the more respected Big 5 or HEXACO. It seems to act as a gatekeeper often; you pass a perceived competence threshold by rubbishing it, even if it has some value

The big 5 model has been validated empirically and statistically over and over. MB type indicator has been discredited since the 80s. That is because even if it has some internal validity, it is not based on any legitimate theory

Nobody is using MB to do that though. In corporates they'll use it for a rough indicator of team balance (i.e. how many extroverts) but mainly it's just to get people thinking about their own behaviours at work. Very few users believe it's foolproof or scientific

More precisely, no typology conceived of thus far has been able to reliably predict success outcomes. It seems imprudent though to presume that predicting success outcomes is the only possible utility for a personality typology.

True. But that is not the value of MBTI. The value is having employees learn the preferences and behaviors of their coworkers. As a predictive tool for future careers or long-term behavior, it is not accurate enough for psychologists.

MBTI is not a test, when you figure out what type you are, that's just the beginning of your own research. I just can't imagine therapists using it with their patients.

Also, look at how it's used at work. IME, mostly to dismiss others, unwanted ideas, and our own failings.

Why would predicting performance be a goal? I’m somewhat confused.
