I think 'manipulation' is influence without consent. Face-to-face influence is something we've evolved to understand, and resist or appreciate, and we can always walk away. Social media weaponization of psychometrics is something we don't understand or give informed consent to.
The shocking thing is that people are shocked. True, although I’m expecting it, I’m still amazed at the response of people when these data breaches / clear examples of ‘nefarious’ exploitation of data, is exposed. At least there will be some discussion before we blithely go back/continue to emit for our digital overloads.
