Talk on 'The Scientific Importance of Free Speech' by @AdamPerkinsPhD cancelled by King's College London under threat of violence by antifa 'protesters'. God forbid KCL should provide adequate security for free speech that's literally about free speech.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5511647/Lecturer-banned-giving-talk-free-speech.html …

Jeffrey Sachs will say that this is just anecdotal evidence. When you look at how many colleges there are and how many speakers, this sort of thing doesn't happen enough to get worked up about. That's going to be the response.

Funny how that's probably not his reaction to school shootings, which are also very rare relative to number of schools.

The logic cuts both ways @primalpoly! How do you not see that your reactions to these rare illiberal incidences are equally guilty of generalizing to alarmist conclusions from singular events? Both examples of the fallacy of converse accident.

The difference is I work in academia where I see the ideological bias and censorship play out every day. The deplatformings that get coverage are just the tip of a monumental chilling effect.

For example, I have friends who have worked at the Kinsey Institution at Indiana University. There have always been opportunistic politicians and activists who try to defund/censor research.

Yes, as a sex researcher, I'm well aware of how the Religious Right can also be extremely censorious and brutal in de-funding research they don't like. The problem there is the ideological climate in government, not on campuses.

Sorry, I messed up linking Tweets. That was an ex. of issues that have always plagued a field. I was wondering if you had specifics about your exp and was thought it might have to do with being in EP. Asking as a psych student wanting to go into EP or cogsci

Most of my career problems have come from working in EP; it's an incredibly stigmatized field, and most folks in psychology hate it and don't understand it...

It was my impression that things had gotten better. Gould and Lewontin like water throwing hysteria was in the past. Today, EP is in Intro to Psych books. People like Steve Pinker, Robert Kurzban, David Buss write NYT best-sellers.
