Hmm. Costly signaling theory suggests otherwise. The question is how we show off. Military parades may be lame, but the Apollo program was cool, even if it was sold to politicians as a PR stunt to intimidate the Soviet Union.

It wasn't sold to politicians as that; that's what it was. It's why we haven't been back in over 45 years.

Well, the NASA engineers seemed to think it was a genuine first step to space exploration, while the politicians thought it was American PR. I guess the politicians were right, which is sad.
