Lot of respect for what he's doing, but I don't know his views in much detail yet. Certainly appreciate his focus on helping young men get their lives together... something I tried to do in my 'Mate' book too.

I don't think it's quite as calculated as this implies, despite having a playful, rebellious boy of my own who gets punished and stigmatized - and I wonder if rebellious girls get rewarded and validated, really, this piece aside. Most schools now value compliance/uniformity.

I don't think it's calculated, but I think it is a side-effect of a sex ratio imbalance in teachers, a highly feminized public education system, and a demonization of normal young male behavior.

Let’s not throw around the word “oppression”- part of the fun of being playful or a class clown is that it annoys other people, teachers included

it seems the statement being made is that playfulness is punished in boys vs girls unequally by teachers. Then the classmates start to mimic the teachers behavior.

It also needs to be acknowledged that “playfulness” is often expressed very differently in boys than girls. More physical, more aggressive, more violent starting at a very young age.

Not to forget, boys and girls are rebellious and playful in very different ways. It's incumbent on parents too to bolster "masculine confidence" outside the school, in playgrounds, competitive sports for example.
