I do not agree with the extreme existential threat position. From my personal experience, the AI researchers I interact with do not either. For a more formal source, The AI100 study did not find cause for concern either. https://ai100.stanford.edu/
My AI rant aside, there are plenty of malicious uses for machine learning as @primalpoly pointed out, but it's really the people programming the machine learning algorithms you need to worry about.
