Very true and something that is often overlooked when choosing a mate. Could it be that the portion of the brain that can predict the consequences of our actions is the last to form at about age 25? 
Til then, parents and friends can often give good supplementary advice on mate choice. We're taught to ignore their wisdom, but isolated individuals tend to over-focus on physical attractiveness & current status rather than character and ambition.

Communication from parents is definitely key. We raised our two (22 y/o girl, 19 boy) to value themselves enough to make sound decisions even prior to adulthood. They reflect as "old souls", but I think they simply appreciated the wisdom of experience and plenty of discussions.
