From that @HdxAcademy survey, more than 40% of all American college students are reluctant to discuss race, sex, or politics in classrooms, for fear that other students would ostracize them as 'offensive'. This is a massive chilling effect that violates the spirit of free speech.https://twitter.com/clairlemon/status/972273295214067713 …

Campus Expression Survey https://heterodoxacademy.org/the-campus-expression-survey-summary-of-new-data/ … found that: 32% of conservatives are v reluctant to discuss politics; 29% are v reluctant to discuss gender; & 30% are v reluctant to discuss race in the classroom. How is that not a free speech crisis? https://twitter.com/JeffreyASachs/status/972150713890549760 …

Speakers internal reflectance is a reaction to years of ideological bullying and social ostracism. It's an index of a real chilling effect, not a symptom of cowardice.

Hey Geoffrey! Since the @HdxAcademy poll isn't representative, you might want to use this one to make your point: "54% polled said the climate on their campus “prevents some people from saying things they believe because others might find them offensive.”https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/07/education/edlife/fire-first-amendment-on-campus-free-speech.html …

What's more: >50% across all political affiliations and races say this as well. So turns out, it's not just a "boohoo, conservatives are afraid to speak" issue. Some great nuggets from that study--you can also download a spreadsheet w/ more granular data:https://knightfoundation.org/reports/free-speech-campus …

As an American abroad, I generally feel a lot more free to discuss a broad range of topics outside of the country than I do in it.

I won't talk about controversial topics with my fellow college students. They are sloppy with language and quick to judge rather than understand.

If it's anything like my classes, 95% of students are reluctant to discuss anything and the 5% have nothing constructive to say, but hate the awkward silence.
