This is worth reading, even if you think there is a free speech crisis on campuses, since it offers some actual data to the contrary. How would you reply to @JeffreyASachs?https://twitter.com/JeffreyASachs/status/972150713890549760 …

Free speech crisis on campus is an example of what @nntaleb calls the "most intolerant minority." A small minority hold all hostage, aided by PoMo teachers, and a large part of the administrative class. They dismantle institutions by exploiting vulnerabilies at the top.

Enemies of Modernity are extremely dangerous – just a handful of people are capable of tearing institutions down. We lived that in '98 with Chávez's rise to power. Look at Venezuela now.

I think he's missing the point. I never thought that most college kids resembled, or were in sympathy with, the obnoxious mobs at Bennington or Lewis & Clark.

The point is that those mobs did exist, they got a lot of publicity, and the reaction from the administration and the college community appeared, at least at distance, to be excessively tolerant that kind of conduct.

The data cited does not make distinctions by field i.e. social sciences. It doesn't refer to how politically active people are on free speech issues & how they obtain a formidable amount of power. Total numbers of pro and anti free speech respondents to a survey misses the point.

There could be an increase in intolerance to free speech on campus without an increase in the number of people who are intolerant, as long as those who are become more vocal and aggressive. Difference between beliefs and behavior.

That it’s examining the wrong problem... which is not that most people are becoming crazy, but that crazy people are dominating the conversation and causing most people to just shut up. This effect will not show up in anonymous polling, but is evident in society

Perhaps if the survey asked are you willing to defend free speech at a personal cost and for those with whom you disagree.
