Is that about the nature of the crime, or the nature of the media coverage? If TV news got equal ratings from covering deaths caused by drunk drivers, or sleep-deprived medical interns, or shoddy work safety practices, wouldn't we be just as outraged?

Making policy decisions based on fear makes for bad policy. Our fear of Japanese spies, led directly to the internment camps. If we make the wrong policy, it is likely that more people will die, not less.
