I’d rather not throw this baby out with the bath water. The mature university as it looked by the end of the 13th c. is the oldest pan-European social institution left to us. It is intrinsic to the very core of Western Civilization. It is us that have become twisted and perverse.

I agree, mostly. But I partly wanted to provoke folks to think about how much would have to change about current universities to get back to their traditional form and function...

Agreed, university can and should be so much more than a 'job credentials factory'. We should not move towards a better world purely by accident. Fate can be cruel. Ground all professionals in history, philosophy, science so we know how our society works and how to improve it

Philosophy will never take a back seat. If engineers and scientists are not taught about it, it will develop spontaneously, and will often be of poor quality. It would be like trying to develop maths today without knowledge of the work of Newton, Gauss or others.

Math, physics, chemistry, and other similars required through out the first 3 years. These kind of things should be common knowledge for everyone, not only for engineering or science degrees.
