Serious question: If the whole point of tenure, historically, was to protect professors who express controversial views, why do so few tenured professors today express controversial views? What are some specific reasons? (I'm working on an article about this.)

But that implies a different question. Not “why don’t professors hold controversial views,” but “why don’t professors express more controversial views to the general public?”

That's right. While academic freedom extends to a prof's extramural speech on matters outside their expertise, is that our expectation?

I would like to see some work showing that people don't do such work.
