Serious question: If the whole point of tenure, historically, was to protect professors who express controversial views, why do so few tenured professors today express controversial views? What are some specific reasons? (I'm working on an article about this.)

Profs express controversial views all the time. The news is full of them.
Yeah, about 50 of us out of about 250,000 tenured professors in the US.

We had a prof who had lived through russian purges after ww2, a Chinese prof who had escaped Mao and was still threatened by US communists, and a berkeley liberal class of @ 70something. We got all sides.
