Serious question: If the whole point of tenure, historically, was to protect professors who express controversial views, why do so few tenured professors today express controversial views? What are some specific reasons? (I'm working on an article about this.)
Many are, but an even larger number are silent semi-'allies' who dare not push back against the SJWs, and/or who vaguely sympathize but don't realize how extreme the situation has gotten.

How do you know that, if centrist and conservative professors can't find one another and the silent semi-allies are, well, silent?

I've spent a fair amount of time seeking them out and talking with them one on one. The fear is palpable and real.
